Before she had the freedom to play golf at various clubs across the nation, she was helping our nation with its fight to remain free during World War II. She joined the Naval Reserves’ women’s program, the WAVES, at the age of 20.
To fight off the nervous energy, Laurie began crafting bracelets at home. Once she learned the cancer did not spread to her lymph nodes, Emily started thinking about her life and what to do with all of her bracelets.
Since 1957, Grandel is the first teacher in the Springfield area to receive the Missouri Teacher of the Year award, and one of four from southwest Missouri. School of the Osage’s Laurie L. Sybert won it in 1999, Neosho’s Robin Montz won the award in 1988 and Donald Heaton from Jasper won it in 1977.
