Greene County prosecutor files murder charge in deadly shooting investigation; suspect claims self-defense

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - The Greene County prosecutor filed a second-degree murder charge in a shooting death investigation in Springfield.

Mickal O. Johnson, 22, faces charges in the death of Christopher L. Kuder, 41, of Springfield.

Officers responded to the 1400 block of East Atlantic Street around 2 a.m. Wednesday. Neighbors told police they heard gunshots. Police found Kuder dead from a gunshot in the street near an SUV pulling a small trailer. A neighbor tried CPR, but could not revive the man.

Police arrested Johnson in an alleyway in the 2100 block of North Pickwick shortly after the shooting.

Investigators say Johnson claimed self-defense. They say Johnson admitted to shooting Kuder in the stomach after feeling threatened. Witnesses say the incident happened after a dispute between the two.

Detectives continue to investigate and ask anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477). This incident marks the eleventh homicide investigated by Springfield Police Department in 2021.
