Fact Finders: Viewer shares concern about tow truck lights
Viewer is worried about confusion with law enforcement vehicles
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Road safety is the topic of this Fact Finders. Melissa wants to know: Can tow trucks have red and blue flashing lights? The answer is YES.
Melissa is concerned these lights can resemble the lights of law enforcement and could confuse drivers. For that reason, tow truck drivers are only allowed to use the red and blue lights when responding to an emergency. Many times your local police department wants a tow truck to clear a crashed car quickly from a highway. Moving crashed vehicles could prevent a second crash and potentially save lives.
“When that vehicle has those lights going for that reason, you need to respond to them the same way you would if you saw an ambulance or a law enforcement officer. Pull over safely and give them room to get through,” explains Sgt. Joe Daugherty of the Nixa Police Department.
No vehicle, not even a police car, is allowed to turn on those lights unless they’re responding to an emergency.
Here’s the section in state law covering the definition of an emergency vehicle; Emergency vehicles use of lights and sirens
