SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office filed a second-degree murder charge against a man in the death of a Springfield man.

Cody L. Browning, 32, faces several more charges included armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in the shooting of Jacob Rowden, 28, of Springfield. Investigators say Rowden died from a gunshot wound Wednesday night.

Police responded Wednesday night to a home in the 1000 block of South Stewart. Officers found Rowden shot after hearing shots fired during a “petty” argument. The witness says she confronted Browning who was holding a gun. Browning then left through the back door of the home.

Another witness told police earlier in the night, Rowden was upset about drugs missing from his wallet. The two then argued moments later. The witness told investigators he did not believe Rowden threatened Browning.

Investigators say Browning’s mother notified police believing her son was involved in the incident. They say an ex-girlfriend told police Browning said he fired the shot in “self-defense.” Police say he stole a van from her at a Springfield Kum and Go. Police later found the van with Browning’s belongings.

Browning declined to provide a statement to police.

Family members say Rowden had five children, four boys and a girl, and was staying at the house on Stewart temporarily.
